    i got one from connect and 5 minutes after it was on it tripped the fuses i couldnt believe it when i tested it and found the new element down to earth a pain in the backside as i didnt have another one,
    the pattern ones normally rub on the back of the drum when they are fitted.

    but have you checked the pump it may have an intermittent fault.

    i would be checking the filter or the pump plug out first.

    could be the bearings or a broken drum spider or foreign object, plug out first of course.

    i dont know about open circuit heater causing no spin but if its got a short it could.
    i would probably connect up a heater and try it but if it doesnt work its the pcb.

    i am sorry to here about any job losses also but it is no surprise a lot of companies are using the recession as a good excuse to get rid of people and there is nothing the unions can do about it.
    i have sold many hoover washing machines and never had any problems with them but when you phone up for a delivery these days you need to get a calender out.

    the heater is visible in the inside of the tank under the lower basket.
