Another Dyson fan, here! 01, 02 and 04…all chuckouts ‘cos people can’t be bothered to learn the basics to unblock them.

From an engineer’s view , the’re crap!…built down to the wire, not a gram of surplus plastic anywhere, and, I suspect, deliberately -so in order to generate parts-sales.
02 handle-bend anyone? (amazing how tou can sleeve with aluminium(pirated from a spare wand) and araldite.

Sole plate? cyclone-entry?…but, the bean-counters are happy,
There are no bag-costs, the suction doesn’t die like a bag does, and they weigh about half of a hoover senior 652….A die-cast “industrial ” model must surely appear, now the market’s saturated….that SHOULD be a good machine,IF it’s developed with integrity, without weak-spots and exhorbitant parts costs.
    All personal opinion, of course!

Have you considered that you open the ‘fridge far more frequently than the freezer?

It is much better to have the freezer UNDER the ‘fridge, thus you don’t have tocontinually stoop to the floor for stuff at the bottom!

Try a good electronics engineer(try a one-man tv&radio repairer) -explain what the board does, he’ll possibly know what sort of device it is, and an acceptable substitute.

Whether it’s cost-effective, is another issue!

Hi, Jotto.. if you have a shufty around the site, you’ll find that a “frost free” that ices up, is usually suffering from a dying temp. sensor
keep an eye on it, if ice starts to build again, you will need a new thermistor (assuming that it’s electronic control and not a mechanical thermostat.
re-the fan,- plasyic ones can be bent by the ice-buildup…you may be able to soften it with boiling water and reset the shape…metal ones, just bend gently. Needless to say, fan must spin freely.

    “the motor goes well enough”

you seem to have missed this, Jim!

If the motor DOES work, but the drum neither agitates nor spins, then most likely it’s the drive-belt.
usually an easy job, you need to access the back UNPLUG FIRST!

pulley about 18″ diameter, concentric with the drum…other pulley on the motor -shaft,about 1″ diameter….belt stretches on, in the absence of adjuster-slot in one of the motor-mounts.

OTOH, if the motor’s making a “BRRRRR”-noise,it’s likely as Jim said…contact “spares at” on here, superfast delivery, reasonable prices, good quality parts….and they’re nice people ‘cos they run this forum!

Oh Dear, Adam, there you go again!
“It is also a very good heat conductor which makes it suitable for ovens.”

The object of an oven is to RETAIN heat, not conduct it!

It may well be expensive, per TON, but I can assure you that it provides a lot more square feet per ton (or square metres per tonne if you prefer! ) than any other metal at that price-level.

The reason that car manufacturers use it, is Fuel-efficiency due to lighter weight. “quality” doesn’t enter the equasion.

    Re: Combination microwave ovens >>>>>>>

Adam, Firstly, the disparaging expression is “BUNKUM “
Secondly, some years ago, a water-treatment works took delivery of a large quantity of (IIRC) Aluminium sulphate. This went into the wrong tank and the village served by the works suffered mass poisoning, chemical burns to the mouth and throat, etc. as a consequence.

The water company denied there was any long-term effect, but analysis of the bones of victims shows a distinct deposit-layer of the aluminium-based compound.

To suggest there can’t be an allergy ,just because the vast majority of humans display no intolerance, shows immaturity and ignorance.

Sometimes you’re the dog, other days you’re the lamp post….that was a “dog” day 😆 thanks for posting your result….you were lucky it didn’t take anything else out.

worth leaving it at the same wattage, to act as a “weak link”. rather than upgrade to (probably) 5W and blow something else.

OTOH, if it fails short-circuit,it could cook something else…..ah, well…

but it doesn’t list thermostats for my Freezer or recognise the info I gave for my thermostat as fitted. So I am stuck unless I am able to determine a replacement.

    that’s why there’s an e-mail facility! 😆

Re: Chest Freezer – stays at -30 deg C

Take this with CAUTION (i’m NOT a ‘fridge engineer!)

the Capilliary and bellows is a sealed assembly, filled with a volatile liquid(ether?) the bellows expands/contracts as the temperature in the capilliary varies….this is used to operate the switch…the pressure is opposed by a spring…I suspect that’s what the adjustment screw COULD operate, in order to calibrate the operating-range withinthe desired temperatures.

BUT! It’s not quite that simple! some ‘stats also have a lever-and-spring arrangement to set the DIFFERENTIAL (again, with an adjustment.

Differential is the gap between cut-in temp and cut-out temp…too wide and the fridge temp varies widely, too narrow and the compressor cycles continuously, leading to overheat and early failure.
the fact your freezer has failed “on” makes me think the capilliary is leaky and the stat has failed in the “running” position.

No doubt a “proper” engineer will shoot me down in flames 😉

Just a reminder….unplug first…..a multimeter or low-voltage test-lamp will be all you need to check the operating-point

otherwise, see the “engineer” link at the bottom of the page (your best insurance against a rogue “repairer” 🙂

Re: Hotpoint Aquarius WMA58 Belt slipping

If you check thebig pulley (unplug first! ) before you put the belt back on, if the pulley can be rocked back and forth andalso the bearings are noisy when you spin the drum by hand, then, as helo75,said, the drum-bearings are U/S. 🙁

If you are able to test components, it would be easy and cheap to replace the offending resistor,-unfortunately, when they cook, the colour-code bands are fried as well. A wire-wound usually has the value and rating printed and there’s a much better chance the ID is readable.

You could always take the board to a radio/tv/electronics repairer.
As many circuits are ,in essence ,configured from standardised arrangements of components, engineers are often able to look at a circuit and make an educated guess as to the type and value of an unidentified component .

    Re: Miele belt squeak

    Hi, Bryan,
Your wife sounds like a lovely lady. areal woman 😉

what sort of Mole grips does she have? Those pointy-nose “Vise-Grip” ones are absoloutely fantastic!..-If you should, perchance, get nipped by a pair of those, the pain is exquisite!

Now, about your Washer…..Ido hope you haven’t continued to use it in it’s squealing, smoking state…you can’t expect the manufacturer to rectify the results of abuse, you know.

I know you are hoping for a new machine, but I think it’s going to be “tough Cheddar” where that’s concerned, old fruit.

you see, contrary to popular opinion, machines wear and age. A bit like granny needing a new hip , so the machine needs a new belt.

Putting it another way, does your wife still wear the same bra as when you married her? do you wear the same underpants???

NO! because they stretch and lose their elasticuty,as does a drive-belt.

Now, if your underwear were to try twirling about 10 pounds of soggy laundry,at over a thousand revs a minute…(that reminds me of the gay bishop 😳 ) I think it would do a lot more protesting than the “squeal ” you got from the Miele belt..

When the regional Manager turns up, I’d suggest a nice cup of tea and a slice of “space cake” -my kids tell me you have to bake these yourself,as they are made with a special herb which can be readily obtained, though it’s not actually on sale legally (bit like 16-year old’s buying booze, really)

Anyway, if you or the lovely Mrs. Bryan, bakes a tasty cake and offers a goodly slice to Mr. Manager, he will have to accept it(cos he’s a guest and it would be very rude to refuse)

A short while after he’s had the refreshments, you should notice the gent is a lot more amenable….NOW is the time to approach the problem you have!

I am told that these cakes have a wonderful soothing, mellowing effect on those who partake of them. I must stress that it’s only heresay.

I do hope you get your problem resolved, then we can ,perhaps, cogitate on other matters.
    do keep us posted!
